As the seasons begin to shift, we’ll embrace the rich colours and organic forms of autumn through expressive botanical painting. We will focus on building confidence with watercolour and ink, exploring beautiful textures, loose mark making, and the delicate precision of fine liners.

Together we will create painterly botanical studies inspired by autumn’s leaves, seed heads, grasses, and wild foliage, learning how to layer transparent washes with expressive ink work to achieve depth, movement, and character. Perfect for those wanting to develop a more contemporary botanical style while expanding their creative techniques.

This inspiring online botanical art course, led by artist and educator Sisetta, is the perfect course to hone your skills- whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned enthusiast, the sessions are packed with tips to build your confidence, sharpen your observational skills, and refine your understanding of colour and technique.

Recordings will be sent out after each class- and you will have access for 6 weeks after the class to rewatch/ rewind/ pause and catch up

Course Outline:

Botanical Skills – Part 2: Painterly Botanicals – Waiting for Autumn
As the seasons begin to shift, we’ll embrace the rich colours, textures, and organic forms of autumn through expressive botanical painting. Across four Tuesday sessions in October, we’ll build confidence with watercolour and ink, exploring transparent washes, expressive mark-making, and the delicate precision of fine liners.
Week 1 – Watercolour Recap: Building Layers and Details
Refresh your watercolour skills by revisiting the fundamentals of a successful botanical painting. Explore colour mixing, transparent washes, layering, and the gradual development of depth, before refining your work with delicate details and finishing touches.
Week 2 – Exploring Mediums: Masking Fluid, Gum Arabic, and Autumn Botanicals
Discover how masking fluid and gum arabic can expand your watercolour practice. Through a study of a strawberry combining ink and watercolour, and a separate study of an autumn leaf, experiment with preserving highlights, creating texture, and enhancing colour, contrast, and depth.
Week 3 – Fine-Liner Drawing and Ink Washes: The Art of Mark-Making
Explore the expressive potential of fine liners and ink washes to capture the character of botanical subjects. Learn how and why botanical artists use different marks to describe texture, form, and intricate details, paying particular attention to the distinct structures and sections of plants, from leaf veins and stems to seed heads and grasses.
Week 4 – Playful Ink and Texture: Experimental Botanical Effects
End the course with an exploratory session dedicated to experimentation and creative discovery. Play with wax, oil-crayon resist, sea salt, and other unexpected materials to create a variety of textures, patterns, and painterly effects. Discover how these techniques can bring spontaneity, movement, and individuality to your botanical work.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a broader range of techniques for combining watercolour, ink, and mixed media, giving your botanical studies a more expressive, contemporary, and personal style.
