All abilities and experiences welcome-

Discover the work of  German expressionist artists Otto Dix, George Grosz and Max Beckmann. Working in Weimar Germany in the 1920’s these artists lead the way in a post- expressionist movement called ‘new objectivism’ largely focused on Portraiture the artists aimed to depict unsentimental reality (as opposed to the romanticised or idealistic tendencies of early expressionist work)
In this course we will be working with the fantastic Emily … to recreate some of Otto Dix satirical characters. Each week we will be using a different medium to explore the ideas and techniques used by the ‘New objectivists’ guided by tutor  London Drawing tutor and artist Rachel Mercer.

Emily Metal Skin is a fabulous performer/ creator and international life model – a muse in the true sense of the word. Creating with Emily really is like going back in time to the early 20th Century- she is the master of recreating characters and imagery – simply an absolute treat to create with!

This course is great for  building confidence in your creative capability- whatever your skill level. Perfect for building strong, expressive portraits – with some fantastically inspiring imagery from Emily!

In week 1 we will explore how to exaggerate facial features and create ‘unsentimental’ Portraits using drawing and low-fi mono-printing that’s easy to do at home. Focusing on expressive use of line.

Week 2 we will explore the watercolours of George Grosz, his use of colour and use of satire.

On Week 3 you will be guided in acrylics/ oil paint. Looking at the Portraits of Beckmann, we will focus on creating high contrast and distorting the figure to fit the canvas.

On Week 4 in acyclic or oil paint we will explore the Portraits of Otto Dix, thinking about how to convey the grotesque characters using the texture of oil paint and powerful colour.

Recordings will be made available after each session and you have 30 days access to rewatch, rewind, pause and repeat.
