EXPRESSIVE PAINTING PORTRAIT: ONLINE COURSE WITH RACHEL MERCER: OCT-NOV 2024

Create strong, expressive and emotionally charged portrait in this fantastic four evening course!

This four week course can be taken in conjunction with our first round of classes in September – or as a stand alone course- all abilities and experiences welcome!

Following the success of our in person Expressionist Painting  Summer School with artist Rachel Mercer- we are now excited to offer an online version – exploring painting portrait through the lense of Expressionist artists, this time focusing on Ernst Kirchner, Max Beckmann and Emile Nolde

On this 4 evening course you will learn about the fundamentals of oil painting and expressive use of colour for Portraits and Self Portraits. Focusing on a different portrait each week, will be taught about the materials of paintings and how to use them. We will continue to delve into technical aspects of colour and colour mixing with a different focus each week.

As the course progresses you will be given greater freedom to choose colours to explore mood and emotion and encouraged through demonstrations and guidance how to be more playful with fragmentation, distortion and brushwork to emphasise emotion and feeling within the portrait.

In weeks 1, 2 and 3 we will be working from a model and explore a warm and cool palette, Cloisonné technique and the mixing of chromatic blacks using a primary palettes. Black outlines will be used to create sharp planes and fragment the face. We will also consider  colour and composition to explore depth /flatness in the Portriat, exploring how distortion and brushwork can emphasis the space of the painting.
In week 4 – returning to the self Portraits and using all the techniques from the previous weeks to fully explore one’s emotions through colour, composition combed with fragmentation and distortion.

The course is packed full of practical tips to create strong, confident drawing and painting- with guided painting and demonstrations to show you how to get started. You will learn everything you need to know about working from the portrait model in oils and acrylics

Recordings will be made available after each session and you have 30 days access to rewatch, rewind, pause and repeat.
