Raw Vision- Kathe Kollwitz Online Portrait Course with Kim Scouller – May 2026

Situation, emotion, expression – join us for a very special Kathe Kollwitz mixed media portrait drawing course with the great Kim Scouller

We will be exploring the emotionally charged work of the great German Expressionist Kathe Kollwitz using charcoal, ink, conte and graphite- in a workshop designed to super charge your markmaking with electricity.

We will be working from set ups based around Kollwitz imagery and model / performers who will take on the characters of her work, with props and lighting to recreate intensity and emotional texture.

Kim Scouller is a master of markmaking and materials- and so great at infusing her workshops with exploration of materials and techniques. With plenty of demonstrations and one to one tuition, her teaching will take a deep dive into the processes behind Kollwitz work allowing you to create powerful and in depth studies.

This is an online course definitely not to be missed!

Recordings will be provided after each class and made available for 6 weeks after the class- to rewind/ pause / and rewatch

MATERIALS AND SCHEDULE

Each week we will explore different materials and approaches to really get to know the possibilities of our tools. Sometimes we will use them singularly and/or in combination.

Kim will go through everything on the first night and you can ask questions if you’re unsure about anything.

Materials List

• Willow charcoal
• Black conté stick
• Black Compressed charcoal
• Graphite stick (4B/6B – darker is better)
• White chalk or white conté
• Indian Ink (week 4)

Other items

• White cartridge paper (A3/A2)Eraser / putter rubber
• Masking Tape
• Hog hair brush
• Small brush or dip pen (or can use a bamboo skewer)

Optional Extras:

• Coloured soft pastels
• Fixative
