Create strong, expressive and emotionally charged portrait in this fantastic four evening course!

Following the success of our in person Expressionist Painting  Summer School with artist Rachel Mercer- we are now excited to offer an online version – exploring painting portrait through the lense of Expressionist artists Käthe Kollwitz, Gabriella Munter and Paula Modersjohn Becker,

On this 4 evening course you will learn about the fundamentals of oil paintings and expressive use of colour for Portraits and Self Portraits. Focusing on a different portrait each week, will be taught about the materials of paintings and how to use them. On the first evening participants will make a monochrome portrait of a model to learn about tone and brushwork and expressive contrast. On the second week we will make a self portrait using two colours and white to understand temperature and colour substitution. On the 3rd week and 4th evenings you will learn about using a primary palette: week 3 from the model and week 4 from your own reflection. We will be looking at examples by German expressionist painters including Paula Modersjohn- Becker, Max Backman, Gabriella Munter and Kirchner. as inspiration.

We will work though portrait using expressive techniques, exploring emotion through markmaking, considering colour and expressive brushwork to build character and emotional depth in your portraits.

This workshop is packed full of practical tips to create strong, confident drawing and painting- with guided painting and demonstrations to show you how to get started. You will learn everything you need to know about working from the portrait model in oils and acrylics
