‘Ferzam’, by Tricia Pepper

Charcoal, watercolour and watercolour pencils on paper, 25cm x 35cm.
Work produced at Portrait – Working From The Model 40: Ferzam on 20/2/21

I experimented with different approaches in this session to try and capture the intense emotions and expressions on Ferzam’s whitened face, trying out drawing on dark then white paper. This was a longer pose, but not without movement. I started with charcoal, progressed to watercolour and then added marks with watercolour pencils. There was something haunting about Ferzham’s presence which I tried to capture. Seeing what other artists have produced from exactly the same poses is always really interesting and inspiring – as are the insightful suggestions and observations made by Anne Noble-Partridge and Kim Scouller.
